This is an example of using custom borders in a floated 3 column layout, inspired by the recent ALA article: “Creating Custom Corners & Borders Part II” by SØren Madsen.
This technique requires only 3 images per column, sliced into [top] [middle] and [bottom], if your columns are different widths you will need to resize the images manually in each instance - to fit the width of the containing div.
I don't know if this approach is any easier/acceptable than the cornered approach, I offer this simply as an interesting alternative.
